Waterproofing is the process of making an object or structure
water-resistant so that it remains relatively unaffected by water or
resisting the ingress od water under specified conditions. Such items may be
used in wet environments or underwater to specified depths.
In construction, a building or structure is waterproofed with the use of
membranes and coatings which are water tight. The roof covering materials,
sliding, foundations, and all the various penetration through these surfaces
must be water- resistant and sometimes waterproof. Roofing materials are
generally designed to be water resistant and shed water from a sloping roof,
but in some conditions such as in Flat Roofs, the roofing must be
waterproofed. There are many types of waterproofing like, bituminous
membrane, Cementitious waterproofing, liquid waterproofing membrane,
bituminous coating etc.
Waterproofing of wet areas in buildings is important not only to the
building but also to the occupants. The aim is to prevent water
seepage/penetration that could cause unhealthy and dangerous conditions or
loss of amenity for occupants. Waterproofing also extends the lifespan of a
building by protecting it from any damages that might be caused by water
leakages.
